The Eighth Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company C is a group of re-enactors dedicated to preserving the memory of the men who fought in the War of the Rebellion 1861 to 1865. The Eighth Michigan was known as the Wandering Regiment. The regiment began it's service by being assigned to General Sherman in South Carolina where he was establishing a beachhead to provide a base for the navy blockade. From there it went to Virginia and was assigned to General Burnside's 9th Corps. With the 9th Corps. the Eighth saw service in both the east and western theaters of operation. The Eighth fought in major engagements in the east, was sent to support Grant at Vicksburg, then dispatched under General Bunside's command to east Tennesee, from there it returned to the Army of the Potomac and served til the end of the war on that front.
The Eighth was continually on the move and as such had problems obtaining supplies. They were short on basics such as uniforms, tents and shoes. Despite the many hardships they endured they had a reputation as a tough, hard marching, hard fighting regiment.
We, the members of Company C, try to emulate the hard campaigning conditions the Eighth lived and fought in. We usually don't bother with tents and aim to arrive on site with everything we need in our knapsacks. Our goal is to be able to walk into the event with everything we need for the event in one trip.
